If he hadn’t been already married to Junia, it was very likely that he would’ve tried to force a marriage between Kit and himself in an attempt to take control of Ruarden without the devastation of war. He did his best to secure a betrothal between Kit and either Andrew or Roland but her father, suspicious of Lucius’ motives, wisely refused to give his only daughter’s hand in marriage to any member of Imperium’s royal family.

Currently Lucius is plotting ways to take over Ruarden by any means necessary, up to and including war, though that is his last resort. Imperium needs the resources that Ruarden produces and the king is all too aware of the devastation that war would create.

Junia is well aware of Lucius’ nearly obsessive desire to seize control of Ruarden and the fact that he considered marriage to Kit as a way to gain that power. And moreover that if he had not been married to Junia that he would have tried for Kit’s hand himself. This knowledge does not bother her. Her place is firmly established at his side. She knows that Lucius appreciates her for her grace, beauty, and attention-generating presence at his side, as well as her ability to appeal to or soothe his ego, whether it be his prowess in politics, trade, alliances, or the bedroom.

She’s accompanied him at certain functions and events, to all appearances just a beautiful woman that Lucius is proud to show off, but due to utilizing her perception and charisma upon others at events, and utilizing her charm and persuasion on Lucius when alone at home, she subtly has influenced the course of some events or functions.

She appreciates the fact that Lucius is territorial of her status as his wife, but that she has subverted it by selecting slaves to service him and berates them on failing to be as beautiful, clever, and skilled as she is whether keeping him company while he eats, drawing him a bath, giving a massage, or providing even more intimate services.

Not as evil as the king. Was a prior potential suitor for Kit, but Kit’s father rejected the offer out of hand, feeling there was something suspicious about the offer from an antagonistic kingdom.

His mother Frances, has started to rely on Andrew’s younger brother Roland rather than Andrew in managing her estate [not sure if this is the right term], and Andrew is well aware she is becoming more emotionally attached to Roland than Andrew, although she would never say so to either son.

Close to his younger brother Roland; the fact that their mother prefers and relies on Roland is something that secretly rankles for Andrew, but he does not hold it against Roland and tries not to hold it against his mother. Andrew is more than happy to provide advice to Roland but Frances is starting to become somewhat irritated by Andrew’s ‘interfering’

Heir to his father’s estate, Andrew doesn’t begrudge the land that his younger brother Roland will most likely inherit when their mother passes away. He is however concerned because he doesn’t think that Roland is up to the challenge of managing it just yet. He loves his brother and is worried for him.

[secret backstory: He is the bastard son of the king and Liselle, a fact that Natasha learned when the King was ailing and concerned for his wife’s future and the stability of the kingdom, so he told Natasha that Killian was one of his oldest and most trusted friends, and as an example of how trustworthy Killian was, explained that Killian adopted Gideon as his own child.]

She is considered a fair ruler, although prone to being headstrong. Rules with logic and reason beneath a demeanor of charm and persuasion and empathy, a difficult balancing act that she was able to perfect as partner to the King.

Proud of her adopted daughter Katerina for being strong-willed, book-smart, genteel, and charming, and prone to spoiling her a little, and proud of her young son trying to be brave for everyone’s sake. She’s protective of Anton and seeks to find situations where he can present as confident and calm as future ruler, and seeks to find situations where he can just be a boy his age - most of those precious and private moments are those where he can spend time with Kit, who is trusted as few others are. The Queen worries for Anton’s isolation after Kit’s departure for her marriage alliance.

Outsiders who look down on the Queen believe that she paid for her step-daughter’s love and allegiance out of the royal coffers rather than out of maternal devotion and striving for stability of the court/kingdom.

Katrina is strong-willed and more than a little stubborn when she has her mind set on something, but because she is a woman in Ruarden she has had to learn to use charm and flattery to get what she wants. She’s quite good at it, generally twisting her father and the men in her family around her little finger. But when her father passed away, Kit’s whole world was rocked to the core. She is honoring his legacy, marrying Tiernán Suairt of Ulentor to keep her people safe.

While she is a little spoiled, she has a kind, gentle heart rather than being a totally spoiled royal brat. Because she loves all the perks of being a princess, fine clothing, magnificent jewels, luxurious palaces, those who do not know her well often underestimate her, a fact she uses to her advantage. She has no qualms about playing the empty-headed lady even though she is highly educated and intelligent.

Kit doesn’t have very many memories of her mother, but her relationship with her stepmother Natasha has always been a good one. Kit adores her little brother Anton and she dreams of finding the kind of love that she saw between Natasha and her father for herself someday.

As much as he wishes he could be a little boy and cling to his mother’s skirts as he used to when he learned to walk, he’s trying to be strong which unfortunately comes across as aloof, almost cold. At least that’s how it appears to many of his courtiers, which doesn’t inspire much confidence in the young monarch.
